5.1 Creating a New Practice Area

5.1 Creating a New Practice Area

This lesson will show you how to create a new practice area in AgileCase.

Access practice areas

One of the key aspects of case management in AgileCase is the relationship between practice areas, case types and case plans. How you relate these elements will shape the structure of the system and allow you to customize AgileCase to work for your business in your specialist field.

In brief, a practice area is a department within your business, for example "General Work" or "Consultancy". A case type governs the content of a case. For example a case type "Consulting" will contain the fields relevant to a consultancy project.

Finally the case plan sets out a timeline consisting of preset milestones so you can ensure each case stays on track- naturally, different case types will require different case plans. The feature we will cover here is practice areas.

In order to set up a practice area, click the button under "Case Type Settings" on the settings menu.

Adding a new practice area

On the practice areas page you will find AgileCase's default practice areas which are aimed at the legal profession. These can be deleted if they are not relevant to your business. In order to create a new practice area, click the "Add Practice" button.

Fill in practice details

You can now name your new practice area. You can also choose a default case type for the practice area. Find out more about case types here. Once you are finished, click "Save Practice" to create your new practice area.

Your practice area has been created

Now your practice area has been added to the list. In this case the example is "Consultancy" and it has been related to the case type "Consulting".

Once the consulting case type has a case plan and custom fields and has been related properly to the "Consultancy" practice area, you will have a dedicated section of your system devoted to consulting work.

This will contain a unique set of milestones and specialist fields within cases and only be accessible to users involved in consultancy work.
